When placed in the S4, S5, A6, A7, Q5, Q7, or even the A8.
This motor shines the brightest in the A6 and A7 where its power and smoothness are perfectly in tune with the car's ideals. This engine is extremely smooth, and powerful. At no point does it ever strain to do what it is asked to do. It also gets very good gas mileage. It is a bit overwhelmed in the Q7 and A8 but never to the point where it's intrusive to the driving experience. In the punched up versions in the S4 and S5 it is a screamer.
Bravo to VW and Audi.

LS3 begs to differ.

What's your qualification of "modern?" I'm fairly certain I'd put forward a different answer. For reliability reasons if nothing else.

The supercharged v6 is amazing in the a6 and a7! However my vote for the best modern engine is the 4.5 litre that Ferrari puts in the 458!

How many applications is it in?

I like the ever-so-slightly undersquare, super rather than turbo and power/weight. Not 100% sold on the "Best Modern Engine" being a 90d V6, though.

That is a big statement. I counter with this:

Modern as in many cars you can buy today come equipped with it.

I agree that the 4.5 is a great motor, but consider how few cars that is placed in.

I suppose that you do have a good point on how adaptable it is.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 23:28 |

Yeah, I'm going to have to toss my vote to the LS series engines. If you need something more common, maybe even the 2.0L Ecoboost. I'd have to think about it though. I just don't think my vote can go to the one you picked, and I even have an Audi badge in my avatar.
![]() 02/19/2014 at 23:28 |

Audi makes some good engines. I have their 3.2l v6 in my a3. However, I think id have to go with an LS engine as the best modern one. Or if you'll allow me to be impractical then maybe a Bugatti W16

Right......
Applications:
2014–present Chevrolet SS
2008–2013 Chevrolet Corvette
2009 Pontiac G8 GXP
June 2008–present Vauxhall VXR8
2010–present Chevrolet Camaro SS
April 2008–present Holden Special Vehicles Clubsport R8 (E Series)
April 2008–present Holden Special Vehicles Grange (E Series)
April 2008–present Holden Special Vehicles GTS (E Series)
April 2008–present Holden Special Vehicles Senator Signature (E Series)
April 2008–present Holden Special Vehicles Maloo R8 (E Series)
September 2008–present Holden Special Vehicles Clubsport R8 Tourer (E Series)
So ONE car currently on sale in the USA runs the LS3. Don't get me wrong, I love the LSx but the 3.0 Audi motor is the most flexible on the market.

Trust me, I understand your skepticism, but the smoothness of this engine is something that you need to drive and experience to really understand.

I know there are absolutely "are you a wizard" levels of balance trickery possible - hell, if GM got as well balanced as they did with the 4.3 one could do almost anything. It's just that while you get a generally more desirably tone and some better behavior torque-wise with a 90d than a 60, I'm not a huge fan of V6s in general, and would be inclined to withhold quite a bit due to stubborn personal preference. Yes, you can get an engine smoother as a V6 with balance shafts than a V8 without, but artificial correction of 2nd/3rd level harmonics isn't really my thing.

You spelled LS7 wrong.

Two.
But the Vortech truck motors, the LS7, the LSA, and every LS motor share a common platform. In all, there are probably close to 1,000,000 LS engines in the world. Not counting all of the crate motors.

Isn't this engine also in the VW Touareg hybrid and the Cayenne / Panamera hybrid?
Also they are underrated …. put down over 300hp to the wheels stock.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 00:23 |

The N55 and N55HP now have hurt feelings. They don't understand what the Audi V6 can do that they can't do.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 00:25 |

coyote engine is best engine. v8, over 400HP, about 400 lb-ft of torque. good stuff
![]() 02/20/2014 at 00:26 |

3.5 liter ecoboost, because more power, more applications, enough torque to power the worlds best selling truck, and the best thing is it doesnt come in an overpriced vw. Ive driven many audis with the 3.0t and they get going fast but I think price should be a factor taken into consideration.

flexible =/= best. otherwise, the "best" motor is the air cooled, single cylinder Honda OHV motor from the 60s and cloned by multiple Chinese manufacturers.

How about the 2.0t ecoboost from ford? It's in the jag saloon, small range rover, Taurus, fusion, escape, edge, focus, mkz, that Mexican sports car, it's used as a base for wrc motors, it makes great power, smooth, responsive, compact, stuffed with modern tech...

Silly Germans. Sucks to equate taxes with displacement. 26mph hwy? An Lt1 would get similar mileage with another 130 hp/tq in a smaller package, less cost, and better than Vag reliability
![]() 02/20/2014 at 12:10 |

Probably trying the engine's Audi roots …. where as the VW shows it off.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 15:34 |

Haha thanks
BTW I'm not saying the Audi engine isn't great. I test drove an S5 once and the engine was nifty. It just seems very similar to the BMW turbo 3 liter. Both engines are used in many applications. And I have heard that BMW worked out the reliability issues they had with the N54.
Both seem like great engines. Buyers can pick based on which type of forced induction they prefer and whether they prefer a V6 or straight 6.

I don't see how counting how many cars an engine is used in somehow shows its flexibility. I believe a testament to the flexibility of LS motors is how often they are used in swaps. When old benzes, silvias, Porsche 911s, Volvos, trucks, miatas, and even some mustangs all have used the same motor with great results, it must be pretty damn flexible. Sidenote: I am a huge fan of the 3.0T and in no way am saying it isn't extremely flexible. I just think showing that it is used in several similar cars isn't the best way of showing that flexibility.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 22:57 |

I've got one of those - S5 cab. It has done everything I have asked it to do over the last year.
![]() 02/21/2014 at 06:57 |

I can't believe I didn't know the 3.0T was a 90 degree V6. Guess it makes more room for the supercharger, but also means they have a balance shaft in there...unless its modernness overcame that requirement too.
